Father's day is a holiday that we celebrate in honour of all the fathers, fatherhood as well as our father figures in our lives. There is no better way to appreciate and celebrate fathers so we can remind them of the special role they play in our lives. The concept of fathers' day came in the early 1900's long after mother's day was celebrated for the first time.
Father's day is considered by many to be the brainchild of a woman named Mrs. Dodd who, having been brought up by her father together with her five siblings following the death of her mother, felt the need to recognize and appreciate her father's and other fathers hard work and selflessness. Mrs. Dodd could not think of a better month to do this as June which also coincided with her father's month of birth.
Although her idea did not pick up immediately, it later received the recognition of the then U.S. President Calvin Coolidge and was later signed making it an official holiday in 1966 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. This paved the way for the celebration of the first official father's day in 1972. Father's days had been first celebrated on the 19th of June in 1910 but not as an official holiday when President Richard Nixon made a declaration that every third Sunday of June should be dedicated to fathers in the form of father's day. To date father's day is celebrated across the world not just as a day of honouring fathers but also men who are father figures in people's lifes. This can include uncles, stepfathers, grandfathers or basically just any male who has been (like a) father to someone. One of the traditions of this day involves wearing roses as an indicator of whether your father is deceased or alive. Red roses are a symbol of fathers who are alive while a white rose symbolizes that they are deceased.
