Father's days had been first celebrated on the 19th of June in 1910 but not as an official holiday when President Richard Nixon made a declaration that every third Sunday of June should be dedicated to fathers in the form of father's day. To date father's day is celebrated across the world not just as a day of honouring fathers but also men who are father figures in people's lifes. This can include uncles, stepfathers, grandfathers or basically just any male who has been (like a) father to someone. Red roses are a symbol of fathers who are alive while a white rose symbolizes that they are deceased.
